I have been trying to make svcd movies for awhile now, but no matter what I do: what filters I try in TMPGEnc, the movies all turn out the same. The quality is the same as the source was before I encoded it. Can anybody help me get a better quality video?![]()

Make it better than the source? Common sense tells you that you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear. In more blunt terms:
Crap in, crap out.As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
Well then what is the point in having filters and all that junk or for that matter, VCD to SVCD?

I give up.

Dont give up
There isnt a point in going from VCD to SVCD if your expecting the quality to go up, if your source file is from VHS and is grainy then you can add smoothers and blurring type things but that in no means makes it better than the original, you might loose the grain but you also loose detail, its the same with audio noise reduction systems.
It depends on your own tastes, when i used to use Tmpeg i put the first half of a film on Noise Reduction and it took 6 hours, so pressed for time i put the second part without it, it took 57minutes and it looked better than the first part, whats your source files anyway and whats wrong with them.
As long as your not trying to make Cam avis look like DVD Rip ones thn there shouldn't be too much of a problem using filters

Then the bottom line is, if you have a good video the quality of the final product is better. Next question, when downloading movies what specifications should I look for for quality.

Instead of D/L'ng movies, which by the way is not legally yours
to begin with, why don't you just go out and buy it on VHS??
I mean, you seem to be finding all this crap via the net, ie,
divX etc., and these are just other peoples encodes of re-encodes
or re-encodes. Shesh. No wonder why you have so much problems
with crap-in, crap-out. Yaiks!
Anyways, as I was saying. . .
May as well just BUY the VHS movie and capture/encode it yourself.
Quality will be just as good (OR better) as whatever you've ben
D/L'ng anywas. I mean, you're in the same direction - quality'wise.
Think about it... $5 per VHS vs. $20 per DVD. At least you wont
be D/L'ng movies that are not legally yours, and as long as you
own those VHS's, surely you can legally back it up to a CD, but
not just for backup purpose (as NOT your case) but more of a
lugzury - - popping in a CD, vs. a clunky VHS tape, and not to
mention, FF/RW etc. vs. jumping from one chptr to the next.
Obviously you have a fast connect, else who knows which other
direction you'd'of taken, ie, capture/encode via VHS/DVD.

Yes, a good video, ie, DVD or VHS is better video, well, the DVD
is anyways, but the VHS could be just as good a VCD/SVCD if done
right, by an experienced person, such as myself. I do these quite
a lot. No, I wouldn't go given you all the necessary steps, as
you have not taken the time to learn from the buttom up. In other
words, I stopped giving away my so called, free spoon-feeds.
If you want good quality, learn how to do it, and start from the bottom. I did.
Movies should be purchased, not D/L'ed (stolen by D/L'ng someone
else's encoded formats to divX/VCD or whatever) unless you've paid
for it as such.
Case you don't have one, a good capture card is the:
* Wintv GO
* ATW (aka ATI-TV Wonder)
OR, you cold go the hardware route,
* DVC II (hardware MPEG1/2)
* etc.
With these cards, you could capture your store bought (legally
owned) source (VHS/DVD) and encode it to VCD or SVCD and enjoy
it all in comfort.And, you'll feel better too.

VHelp i dont think he cares about legal or not, and i have to admit to be a bit of a bad boy at that times as well, but i tend to only download stuff which i cant buy anywhere and if i really like it i will buy the DVD anyway.
I have never captured from VHS and i doubt i ever will, i dont like VHS picture quality, even on expensive players, no where what i can achieve on 2 discs with a 100min movie, so i dont see the point unless its to backup something important, but your the expert here so i will try to keep an open mind, but i doubt dcapp will want to pay for a capture card and $5 a movie when he can d/load them in a few hours, and Divx can be great quality, better than SVCD in most cases.
Dcapp Great Quality AVI converted equals good quality mpg, you cant make a good quality avi great, cause you would have to loose detail making it look worse and you have to work within the constraints on your DVD Player.
If your D/Loading video things to do are after you have about 20mb of it go into your d/load folder and make a copy of the download.dat file this is if your using Kazaa, it might be 700mb but you only have what it says in the transfers box, after you have a copy of the .dat file rename the dat part to avi, right click on the file and select the properties tab and it should tell you all about the file your downloading.
Things to look for are Divx 5.02 and DivxLow Motion, avoid MS Mpeg 4 unless your into dodgy Video Camera copies which you can do nothing with.
Stop trying to get better quality than the original, it cant be done, its like saying if i polish a piece of glass enough it will turn into a diamond, aim for the same quality as the original and if you stick to high quality sources the you cant go wrong.
Sorry if this goes on a bit and if i have offended anyone especially moderators by talking about illegally obtained movies, i do this for my own personal use on stuff i intend to buy at a later date or would never buy anyway, i make no profit out of it and dont condone anyone who does

You know, the Kazaa guys didn't care about intellectual property (music, movies, software) piracy when they were raking in adware and spyware revenues from the software that assisted such piracy, but changed their tune and called the folks that made Kazaa Lite pirates, because they deprived Kazaa of the aforementioned revenues. Haha, it all depends on whose ox is being gored, same old story.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
I dont agree with Kazaa and other file sharing programs but im not strong enough to not use them occasionally, as for artists rights, by stealing music, software, movies, your not stealing from the artists themselves they're usually been paid already your stealing from the greedy fat cats who publish them, but this is always the excuse people give when they are caught stealing something from a shop, that they're not really stealing from someone who cant afford it, and i dont suppose me saying this is any different from the excuse a shoplifter would give.
I Love music and i love films but i only buy what i love, i download the rest, if this makes me a bad personso be it, but untill they make it a criminal offence punishable by law then i will keep doing it
