The CVD format looks very interesting, especially since it will still be DVD compliant.
From my experience with many SVCD/DVD players, I have found that the most compatible format with high quality was to use SVCD with MPEG 1 VBR. Often I have found that even layers that did not support standard SVCD were capable of playing those flawlessly.
I expect when I test CVD I will find the same problems with MPEG 2 video track and can probably increase the compatibility by using MPEG 1 VBR instead. However will the track still be DVD compliant?

As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

Thanks for your feedback.
Actually I should have checked http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvd.htm firstThis, and other documents I have found on the net state that MPEG I can be used for DVD, with no bitrate limit (apart from the normal one) or VCD resolution limit.
Skittelsen, where for you get your maximum bitrate and resolution from?
One problem I foresee with using MPEG I at VCD resolution is having it played back at the correct aspect ratio... I guess the only way to know is to test it, which I will be doing soon.
