hello...
i have an DV cam JVC gr-dvx44.. there is an dv out .. but it seems like there is no dv in ... now i dont know if i bought an normal firewire card or an DV.now AV Basic for capturing an other things...
does the DV.now AV Basic work better than an firewire card when my DV cam has no DVin ?can i insert real time effects when my cam has no dvin ?
can i work faster with an DV.now AV Basic like an firewire card with my equipment... ?
sorry, sorry for that ******* english ...
thx -
You need a "video in". On my camera Sony TRV25, you have to hook up the VCR in the "video in" and select "DV out" in the menu and hook up the firewire cable to the computer. However, many cameras do not have a video in (also called pass through function, analog in, or analog to digital conversion feature).

yg1968,
The DV port (DV-In/Out) in the camcorder is used to transfer video from camcorder to PC (and back, if DV-IN is enabled). This is where you connect the firewire cable (with the other end going to your firewire card). But I agree, it's also used to connect DV Camcorders together, for cam-to-cam video transfer.
chegga,
DV.Now AV 'IS' a firewire card. What's special with this card is that it also has Analog Video In, meaning you can transfer DV and Analog video (VHS, Video8/Hi8, etc). I don't have the card so I can't say anything about quality or whatever, but I was able to look at her spec before.
Was the cam purchased in europe? The problem with a cam 'without' a DV-IN, is that:
1. You cannot transfer the edited video (edits done on your PC) back to the camcorder thru firewire. Work-around, you can do this if your PC has a 'video-out', and if your camcorder has a video-in. But then, that's not the ideal way of doing it (for dv camcorders).
2. If you have another dv camcorder, you cannot do cam-to-cam transfer of video. Again, the work-around is to use the video-out/video-in...but again, that's not the ideal way of doing it (for dv camcorders).
The software that came with the card 'SHOULD' be adequate for your needs (transfer video from cam to PC). If the card didn't come with software, check the TOOLS section on the left, you might find something useful.
hope this helps.[/quote] -
Jtor, thanks for the correction.
I had forgotten that DV in is also used for exporting back to the miniDV camera. I tend not to export back to the camera but instead convert the file to mpeg2. On my MiniDV camcorder, the DV in and DV out are actually the same connection (which makes it easy to get confused).
P.S. I have edited my initial comment in order to avoid confusing people.
