    Hello!

I read in a article that that within a year DVD movies will have watermarks on them and will therefor be impossible to rip/burn.

the article said that new DVD burners would not rip a watermarked DVD and the standalone DVD players would not play a copy with a watermark.

BUT "old" DVD writers would ignore the watermark copy protection
so my question is WICH TYPE OF DVD BURNER SHOULD I BUY?
    Considering possible future watermarks!?

You can read more about it here (In swedish):

So, if I understand the ZDNet story corectly, no DVD burners are equiped with watermark technology YET. Or....?

After reading the story on ZDNet, these two paragraphs stood out to me.

The plan would work on two levels. A DVD burner that recognises a "don't copy" watermark would simply refuse to burn the copy. Similarly, a DVD player that is loaded with an unencrypted movie would look for the watermark. If it finds a "don't copy" stamp on a copied DVD, it would refuse to play the movie.

Each unit sold before the watermarking technology is in place is a potential problem from the studios' point of view. These devices, whether players or burners, won't recognise watermarks and could still be used to rip and burn movies.

With what knowledge we are exposed to, the next generation of burners are several months off. While we wait for 4X burning, the potential for this watermark technology could be incorporated. Perhaps the units that are available now may be the better choice sacrificing speed over abilities. Now with -R units dropping below $250, it makes me wonder if they're not making way for 4X units. Are they closer than we think?
