SVCD not playing in Wide Screen

I am trying to burn the movie The Time Machine with Nero it is in SVCD format but when I play it on my home DVD player it shows lots of black space on the top and bottom of the screen. Is there a way to get it back to wide screen format? And why is it like this, was it the way it was backup from DVD?

It was made like that...

Do you have a zoom on your wide screen TV ?, I use it to remove these borders when present.

Thanks for the info. It is good to know that it was recorded that way and that it is not my equipment failing. I will try it with the zoom and see how that looks.
