I've looked through boards, and done web searches... but the terminology is all new to me--and over my head.
Can a single JPEG image be taken from a DVD? What's the terminology used to do this? What tools?

You can use the Cyberlink PowerDVD player(usually comes with your DVD-ROM) to take snapshots. The snapshots will be in BMP format. You can compress it to JPEG using software like Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, Fireworks, etc...
