Hey, guys
so thanks to poisondeath I finally completed my video, but the site that wants me to upload it wants it to be in DivX format or something... I have detailed instructions for compressing the video using virtualdub, but I can't put my un-rendered clips into virtualdub, and I don't see DivX as an option in the adobe window (screenshot below)
Any advice, as always, will be hugely appreciated

install xvid , you specifically need the xvid vfw version for it to show up in premiere
it will be under microsoft AVI
your dimensions of 848x595 are very non standard and bizarre aspect ratio for square pixels; the dimensions should be evenly divisible by 16 ideally (or at least 8) - or it won't work
another option: you could also use debugmode frameserver to frameserve out of premiere to use another encoding application -
hey what's up again bro lol, your posts are always contain just the right mixture of hope and despair for me... Should I try to figure out how to fix the aspect ratio before doing anything else, or will this frameserver thing be my first priority?
-
upon closer inspection it doesn't have to be Xvid, I can prolly just do it through adobe (which presents the problem of which options to select, but later lol)
most clips were recorded at 1440 by 900, but some were at 1680 by 1050. is that what you mean? -
yes, but that too is non-standard. 1440x900 is 1.6 AR , but it depends what the rules for submission are.
You might have to add black borders to preserve the aspect ratio (otherwise letters & people would look too fat or too skinny) , but if they allow different aspect ratios then that make it easier
xvid doesn't come with adobe, it has to be installed. It's the open source (and Free) equivalent of divx. ; both are implementations of mpeg4 asp (mpeg4 part 2)

It's not showing up in adobe however...possible to just use windows media video 9 or something?
-
Set the format at the top to "microsoft avi" , not windows media
If your submission guidelines allow WMV9, then go ahead
If you want to use vdub, then use debugmode frameserver to export out of premiere , or encode to a lossless intermediate AVI (e.g. lagarith or huffyuv) first -
i don't see microsoft avi up there ><
I have soooo many questions that I can't even remember them all. Let's say I go forward with WMV9, do i need to modify the aspect ratio? If so, what should I change it to? And the site wants videos compressed at maximum quality, so what settings will I need to go through and change to make sure it looks as good as can be? And would I have to add black bars now or after encoding? /boggle -
I can't answer anything accurately without seeing the rules , as everything suggested might violate them
If you want maximum quality and compression, you should be using h.264 -
If this is for web, chances are the pixel aspect ratio will be square (1:1) . But there might be rules for aspect ratio . Don't you have a url or a copy of the rules?

Compress your video files
- The tutorial here will show you how to compress a video with the latest codecs. When you record with fraps the raw files are extremely large. Compressing your video will make it much smaller so you can submit it to us over the internet in a reasonable amount of time.
- If you know how to compress video files and want to do it your way then you do not need to follow the instructions in this video. Please make sure that the compression you use ouputs a clear and high quality video.
-
ok if you said you have detailed instructions on vdub from that site, it's probably best to follow those, but it doesn't say what compression to use, so you could just as easily use WMV9 - this might be easier for you
for the dimensions and aspect ratio, you should use the same as your input. Both your videos are 1.6 AR . You should use the original 1440x900 or 1680x1050 frame size
If you need a "smaller" sized version use something that is evenly divisible by 16
so 848x528 (both are divisible by 16) will give you AR of about 1.61 which is close to the original of 1.60 (so you don't get skewing)
No interlaced processing; everything is progressive -
wait 1 more question. If I want to ensure high quality, would it be worth it for me to mess with any of these advanced settings, such as "Decoder complexity"? It defaults to auto but it could also be main complex or simple. And how about average video bitrate, it starts at 208 but i can slide it all the way up to 10000 if I want. will that improve the quality?
And should I leave the keyframe interval at 5? -
higher bitrate means less lossy (= better quality) , but larger filesize since filesize = bitrate x running time
use wvc1 (wmv9 advanced profile) for slightly better quality
you can increase the keyframe interval (it will be more efficient compression, but seeking will be slower) , but I would just leave it
you can encode a section to test first, if these settings are adequate for your goals, then proceed with the full project if they are, or re-adjust if they are not -
how about the bitrate mode? should it be constant or variable? and thanks a lot dude i owe you my firstborn
-
variable is more efficient (peaks and valleys) , and what you should use
no need for the firstborn, just a mana potionfrom whatever game that is
-
hey poison i hope ur out there still. My first attempt at rendering came out much poorly than expected, so this time I'm going to do 2 encoding passes, VBR unconstrained, 848 by 528 with a pixel aspect ratio "same as project," and keeping it at 10kb/sec. If you can think of other things I can do that will allow my video to render even better than this please lemme know, I will have to do this again some other way if the quality is still poor
edit: turned out to my satisfaction, thanks for everything poison
edit2: actually turned out a bit too big
edit3: can you tell me how to cut my video in half? I need to split it or the site won't take it =(Last edited by metathran; 31st Jan 2010 at 10:31.
