Does anyone know if there is any software now or in the future that would allow the writing of VCD/SVCD format on DVD-R (or DVD+RW) and have them work in either computer and standalone players? I just thought it would be a great space saver for episode TV and just cool to have half
or a season of 1 hr shows (or whole for 9.4 gig) or an entire season of a sitcom (or 2 seasons for 9.4 gig) on 1 disc!
    Thanks,
    VCD Trader

In one word: no. There probably wont be one unless theres interest in the idea. It's not really an attractive idea either, why would you want to burn vcd when you have a dvd burner? One reason vcds are becoming more wide known is because they can be created without a DVD burner and can be played on most standalone DVD player.

    Hi,

You will probably get pretty good space-saving on DVD by burning at standard DVD resolution but at a much reduced bitrate. For VHS tape and off-cable captures, I burn SVCDs at a bitrate of 1900-2000 and, after basic filtering in VirtualDub, I get results "better" than the source. After all, there's no point in a high bitrate if it doesn't give better guality.

Try a bitrate around 2000 on a DVD#RW and see for yourself. Please report back if you do!

    P.S. I used the # in DVD#RW instead of choosing between '-' and '+'.

  4. You can't burn S/VCDs per se onto recordable DVD media.

However, you can make a DVD onto DVD+/-R/W media using VCD compliant source files.

The DVD specs support for video framesizes/specs beyond what you normally see for DVDs. Have a look at the DVD FAQ for more info.

In terms for authoring S/VCD video files onto a DVD, have a look at the guides on this site.

    Good luck.

    Hi,

I just looked at the "What Is" section here and found this under DVD Technical Specs:

    Video:
    up to 9,8 Mbit/sec MPEG-2 or MPEG-1
    720 x 480 pixels
    352 x 240 pixels (VCD Standard)
    352 x 480 pixels

    29,97 frames/second
    23,976 frames/second (NTSC Film)
    Audio:
Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM(uncompressed audio), MPEG-1 Layer2 but one track must either have DD or PCM Audio.
This suggests that a properly encoded MPEG matching any of these specs will produce a valid DVD playable in any DVD player.
