    Compatibility with stand-alone DVD-Video players has to do with mostly the quality, brand, and type of DVD blank discs and what the software does to the discs in creading DVD-Video.

    DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW drives are mostly designed and manufactured by the same companies such as Pioneer and Ricoh. That ADS DVD-R drive seems to be another Pioneer OEM. All external DVD+R/+RW drives I have checked are based on Ricoh MP5125A internal drive.
