I run my really old unstable off onto my hi8 camcorder first because it has a built in TBC
just a tip-most camcorders do have a TBC in them so if you have a really bad tape you might be able to save it by recording it onto the camcorder before you capture it
update on the old footage it droped over 400 frames in less then ten minutes after running it through my hi8 it only droped 19 frames total in over twenty minutes time

Thanks for the tip... But I have to ask, what is TBC?

TBC Stands for Time Base Corrector, a TBC digitally corrects the picture to make it very stable again, usually the top 3-5 vertical lines it corrects, unless you have a very exspensive device or SHVS machine or like my Panasonic DVD recorder DMR E-20, its TBC corrects the entire frame. Most camcorders unless you have a $2000 one does not employ the entire frame of TBC, they are very costly, too costly for your $500 to $800 camcorders. Most higher end VHS and SVHS decks also have TBC's. I am talking in the $800 to $1200 range Prosumer models.
