  1. I have a new P4, Sony Vaio muiltimedia set up with 511 MB RAM, 80GB HD. Fast PC. But it gets very s-l-o-w to process operations after a long encoding session. I run chkdisk and defrag, which helps, but find I am doing it more and more. Any ideas on what's happening here? Thanks.

  2. Probably a memory leak or orphan process caused by one of the programs used, this is fairly common. Do a reboot after an encode, if this brings back the speed its a program bug, not much you can do about it. check Task Manager for any processes still running, but its probably memory.

How long is long ?. I have been encoding with TMPGEnc all day today, I am also downloading from Kazza at the same time, and typing this message, checking email every 15 minuets. Playing sections of movies/songs

Do you have case fan's ?, and do you have an Intel motherboard, which comes with "Active Monitor" which monitors the CPU temperatures, as well as the FAN, and the RPM of the case fans.

It could be memory leek, but it could also be the temperature of your CPU, shutting the speed down for a rest

    P4, 1.6, Intel motherboard.

  4. Nothing like a good restart after an encoding session, or after any strenuous computer activity for that matter.

  5. Hate to do this, but think I might have to reformat and carefully, selectively reinstall some apps. Guess it's possible that I loaded up too many different DVD burning and encoding programs in the process of learning all of this stuff. Maybe it's affecting the PC.

To start again, you don't need to format, why does everybody do that ?, there is only 2 folders to get rid of, once they have gone you can do a fresh install. Any other folders outside of these 2 can be deleted (If its a program install) or left alone if its you backup.

    C:\Windows and C:\Program Files

    Windows 95/98
    1, restart in MSDOS
    2, type "smartdrv" (Enter)
    3, type deltree windows
    4, type deltree progra~1

Now restart computer, and boot from startup floppy.

    c:\>smartdrv
    c:\>deltree windows
    c:\>deltree progra~1

Press enter after each of the above 3 commands.

If bad command or file name, change to c:\windows> before you use the command. Smartdrv is a hard disk cache. progra~1 is c:\Program Files but its 8 bit name is progra~1
