  1. recently downloaded an svcd off the net. when i viewed it on my comp using powerdvd, it worked fine. then i burned it onto cds and tested them on my comp. and again they worked fine. i then tried to play these cd's on my dvd player (pioneer dv 440) and they do not have color. they are shown as black and white. this is very strange. at first i thought my standalone was messed up. so i tried watching one of the other svcd's that i have and voila! it worked fine. i tried to watch a few more and they all worked fine. i then put in this svcd i burnt and it was black and white again. the same svcd plays color on my comp's dvd player.

someone told me it was a pal/ntsc issue and suggested that i try an s-video connection. i tried that using an s-video wire and still no luck.

can someone please help and tell me how to fix this problem?

    thnx for your time...

Yep, i'm having exactly the same problem with my Philips DVD-612. Some SVCD's play well, others go b&w.
Could somebody PLEASE give a hint!?

  3. yeap instead try the setting of RGB on your DVD player instead of s-video if that doesnt work check to see if your Tv can playback 50Hz of PAL or viceverser to NTSC payback.

  4. Yes, It is almost certainly a PAL encode. Chinese DVD players, Apex/GE and some others will play either type. Philips and Pioneer are both brands that only play the standard of the country they are sold in. You can re-encode to NTSC using TMPEGnc using the SVCD NTSC Film template. The film template is nearly the same frame rate as PAL. If you use NTSC template (not film) the play back maybe jerky and since it adds apox 4 frames per sec also likely to be too large to fit on a CD.

  5. I have the same player and have had this happen twice, so I feel your pain. Next time you download a file check it's framerate. If it's 25fps then as far as I know that means it's PAL and won't play right on the DV440. 29fps is what you want to see. Hopefully you have a faster computer than mine because it took me more than 2 days to convert 2 discs! I really need a new computer....
