**I am sorry if this is a double post, i had problems posting last night***
situation: 34 episodes of the Adventures of Pete and Pete on 7 VHS all taped in SP mode. I want to capture them into divx or mpeg or something reasonably sized so i can both archive them and also share them online on kazaa or similar.
Tools: 800mhz, 256mb ram, win98se, 20gig HD with about 8gigs free (i could free up more if need be)
Note: i obviously dont need to have all the episodes on my hard drive at once, as this would take up a ton of room. I would only convert a couple or maybe even one at a time and burn the divx files to CDRs for storage.
Question: Because this is a laptop, it doesnt have a capture device built in. i was thinking of getting a USB Instant DVD (http://www.adstech.com/products/USB_Instant_DVD/intro/USBInstantDVD.asp?pid=USBAV-700) to capture the video with. It can capture both the needed resolution and frame rate. Is this the correct tool for the job? will this device capture the video onto my HD where I can then convert to Divx, or something similar, and then burn onto a CDR as data (NOT A VCD!!!)?

if i were you, i'd find someone with a desktop computer and a capturing device and do it that way. there is a good capturing guide over to your left. i gringe thinking of the quality you will get from that laptop.. but on the bright side, you have a shitload of episodes of an awesome show. i wish i had it.

That looks like it will do everything you want....I wouldn't worry too much about the computer its conected to...You've got more processing power on that notebook than most.
But do check the capture card comments at the left and see if anyone says any thing about that specific device..
