I want to add subtitles whilst encoding a VCD in TMPGenc. I have the subtitles using a Vobsub filter in Virtualdub, and the vob files are ready on my HD. I now want to use Virtual dub to frameserve to TMPGenc. I start up the frameserver as per instructions on this site, but no matter what I try TMPGenc will not accept the .vdr file produced by Virtualdub. I think there is something pretty basic I have missed, here. I have tried various versions of TMPGenc, from 1.2 to the latest, and none will recognise the .vdr file produced by Virtualdub. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

  2. I haven't successfully used the frameserver yet (when I was trying it I didn't realize I needed to run those registry mod's, oops).. but you might want to try saving the .vdr with an .avi extension like this: .vdr.avi..

    Hope this helps,

I'll try this and see what happens. My slow and dirty fix is to first encode to DivX, which is not an ideal solution.

Don't convert to DivX bro, worst case scenario, at least do it to an uncompressed avi.

In TMPG you can also up your Direct Show media filter. (that's what opens avi's etc)

Open TMPG - go to OPTIONS - ENVIRO SETTINGS - Vfapi Tab - Rt CLick on DirectSHow, Increase Priority Level

Make sure though you've installed the Vdub Fraeserver Properly. That is proabablt y the issue. Also, be sure to save your file as stated above

    movie.vdr.avi

You should be good to go.

First thing I tried was the Auxsetup. I'll have to go via DivX until I get the solution. The alternative is learning French. But I'll keep the vobs on my HD in the hope of a solution. And the next thing I'll try fiddling with is the Direct Show media filters. Thanks. 8)

No amount of fiddling with VFAPI priorities seems to have any effect. I stll can't get it to accept the vdr file frame-served from VirtualDub.

  8. A few things, you need to name it as a .avi. And also there is a certain plugin for virtualduib I had to get for it to work. Try the virtualdub site, it is where I found the info.

Thanks. Renaming to avi doesn't seem to work, so I'll check out the VDub site as suggested. 8)

  10. Hi !

What I do is use VFAPI Convertor v1.03b to change the .vdr 'signpost' into a 'fake' .avi.
You can then load that into just about any app (including Premiere!)

Unfortunately, the current version of VFAPI Convertor (v1.04b) doesn't support .vdr (don't know why he took it out!?!) and it took me ages to find the older 1.03b - but if you wanna email me I'll send it to ya!

What actually happens is that VFAPI Convertor creates a .avi file that contains all the audio (uncompressed) but only markers to the video content. This has the plus of only requiring VirtualDub to frameserve the video content and therefore puts a little less strain on your CPU

    Hope this helps,

Cheers! I've emailed you. I've just about run out of ideas with this one, after trawling the net and following all the guidance on the VDub site. If not sorted by next week I'm going to get a *Teach Yourself French*, course, then I won't need the damned subtitles. 8)

  12. Apart from boosting up the Directshow VFAPI to 3 in TMPGenc I find I have to (in Virtual Dub) save the vdr file to a single number eg 1.vdr or 2.vdr to make sure it loads

TMPGenc then will load it OK. If using TMPGEnc Plus then the wizard is more reliable

    Hope this works

If you use VD 1.4.10, copy MSVCR70.dll to system32. You have to install the handler for AVI file frameclient support. (AuxSetup). Save the signpost file as *.vdr. Leave the proxy mode untouched.

    @sue denim
VFAPIconv 1.04 converts VD signpost files as well, if you register readavs.dll to VFAPI.

Whoaaa! I think it's working. I copied MSVCR70.dll to system32 set proxy to off and tried again. It didn't work first time, but TMPGenc hung, so it looked like it was trying. Knocked Directshow VFAPI back down from 3 to 1, and the next time it accepted the vdr file. I'm just going to try to get the subtitles on, as the thought of learning French scared me a bit. I'll report back later. 8)

Definitely working now. VDub is frameserving to TMPGenc, and the permanent subtitles are added as planned. Many thanks for all the help.

you should try using avisynth, and call the virtualdub subtitle filters:
