I want to prepare a VCD of a movie I have. I've followed the steps on this sites guide, but I get the following error message when I try to open the video source:
"File XX (filename) can not be open or is unsupported"
The file is a .avi, yet when I right-click the file and check the properties, it says "unknown format"
The movie plays fine through the DivX player and I've installed all the reccomended codecs.
Any ideas?

Did you try installing nimo Codec pack? By the way, DivX 5.02 is now out - this is quite recent
Wish I had more ideas, hope this works... -
Just installed the Nimo pack and it works! Now my only question is how to get two files joined into one so I can burn them on one cd...
I tried with virtualdub but it errored out...any ideas on this one? -
Are you trying to merge two .avi files? or 2 mpeg1/2 files?
I know tmpgenc has some tools if you go to File>>TOOLS>>Merge and cut... you can merge files there. -
I checked into that but my files are .AVI, those tools are only for MPEG's...
Also, is it possible to burn these things to a CD-R for playback in a regular DVD player? -
yeah----many options....
VCD is mpeg-1 format. U can use any CD-r and record using many softwares....Ulead DVD moviestudio, Ulead DVD workshop, Sonic MYDVD etc. Just go the the How to Author section on the left....and you will find many how-to's.
Oh yeah---your player has to support VCD playback....check the list on this site for compatibility -
For a precise joining of MPEG files TMPGEnc Tools is not good. PowerDirector and iFilm also do not reencode your files but you can join them more precisely.
You can burn your result as S/(X)VCD and the playback is possible in DVD players that support S(X)VCD decoding on CDRs. Not all players support CDRs but most of them do.
To join AVI files VirtualDub is one of the best and you can use any other video editor software for this. -
I posted my previous reply before seeing kktk1's first post>
If your files are AVI, you should encode them by an encoder like TMPGEnc, Panasonic, CCE.
In TMPGEnc or any other encoder load the correct profile and go!
To burn VCD>VCD MPEG1 and for SVCD>MPEG2 then import your encoded file in your favourite authoring program and burn.
The time you need for encoding depends on the AVI codec, its resolution and being progressive or interlaced and your computer power and speed!
On a VCD you have one track for filesystem and the number of your MPEG files so if you don't like to see a gap between the parts first join your AVIs and then encode them to MPEG.
You could join your files after encoding as well.
Joining AVIs has some benefits over merging MPEG files and therefore is better!
There are very good guides for DivX>VCD conversion and DivX cut/join at Doom9.org. -
You guys rock! I appreciate the help.
I've used TMPGenc to encode the 2 (this movie has 2) AVI's meaning I now have 2 MPG's...I'm guessing I have to join them using one of the products you mentioned then burn?
Is that accurate? -
again depends on what you want to do.
If all you are looking for is continous playback, then that can be achieved even with 2 mpeg files.
For example, your dvd/vcd authoring programs usually will play one file after another anyway...on my last project, I used 3 mpeg files.
Imported the 3 files in Ulead dvd workshop. these play back to back on the final product. -
I understand that these will play on a PC, but my main goal is to be able to use them in my standalone DVD player. Will the steps you mentioned work for that as well?
-
yes they should. by default, after one file is played to the finish, the second file starts to play automatically. although some people at times see a break or freeze between these files...you will have to see for yourself if there are any issues or not.
I use Ulead dvd workshop and that even lets me pick what I want to do after each file is played...naturally i let it play the next file in line...
this is how i get continous playback.
Ofcourse you could obviously join the files and import them into your authoring program as 1 large file..... -
I am having the same original error that Pinhead saw with TMPGEnc. I have already installed Nimo (again) but no luck.
I am trying to take join audio and video that have been de-muxed.
Any suggestions? I'm considering buying TMPGEnc Plus but don't want it if it won't do this.
TIA.

I was with the same problem few weeks ago, then I red a post from someone and fix the problem,,,,
I hope this works for you,go to TMPGEnc>Options>enviromental setting>
then go to the vfapi plugins, right click on those avi plugins and click on higher priority, then when you place them on the top of the list try it to open an avi file.Rigo.F
