  1. Anyone noticed lately here in the U.S. that retailers(Bestbuy,Circuit City,
etc)no longer advertise vcd, svcd capability in their flyers?Do they fear
the evil empire or is it just an oversite by their marketing department?

Maybe they just figure that VCD/SVCD is so frequently used in other countries that here in the USA we'll stick to DVD/Mp3 disks.

  3. yeah maybe both of you are correct but a lot of people still don't know wht a vcd is.
I have had conversations with people telling them that I got into making my own vcds and about 90% of the people don't know what it is
They say oh my dvd plays them but "What are they exactly"
We were all NEWBIES once and the only stupid question is the one that's not asked?

Same here, most people i tell about vcd creation have a confused look on there face. I now just tell them I can burn a dvd on normal cd's. It's much easier than explaining VCD creation. Then if they ask for more info on the subject I explain what VCD's are and the process I take, because I'm the only Mac user in my circle of friends. I Rule

  5. I think it's more along the line of DVD burners becoming more mainstream and to head off the questions about it. Imagine the average Joe Blow knows nothing of VCD, much less what a DVD burner can do. Add to that a salesperson unknowledgeable. I can hear it now, "So, I can copy my DVD's then, right?" I suppose the salespeople will tire of that one in the next year or so as well as I am sure they are tired of explaining what a VCD is....

I can only imagine what the conversations must be like, what with explaining Macrovision, MP3, WMA, VCD, CDRW, CDR, DVDR, DVDRW, etc... Good thing the boxes don't have emblems for everything.... I am sure more than one person choose not to get the DVD player with VCD capabilities due to the fact they thought it was something bad.

A fun approach these days would be to walk into a store and ask them if any DVD player they carry could also play mp3's on DVD+RW....

I bet it's bacause they don't want to waste the time to teach the peons who work at the stores about VCD and SVCD because they fear they will so fill their heads with information that their heads would implode. Or because they find it funny to watch the sales people struggle and stutter out answers to VCD questions on the security cameras.

Actually they prob see it as a ask and tell basis. Not many people care about VCD this or SVCD that, thus why waste the space to advertise it and just wait until they ask about it.
