I have given cheap Divx/XviD capable players as presents for the last couple of years so that I can share videos and TV captures with a group of friends during the rest of the year. The goto cheapie was always an RCA at WalMart for $35-$40 but it is no longer there, at least not on the website, their current cheapie is a Philips that is out of stock and only sold online.

Any other suggestions for cheap ($40ish) XviD players that are easily found locally in the US? I know that the quality isn't gonna be great, no HDMI, Upconversion etc. That doesn't really matter. Most of these guys are still using standard def playback displays.

    Thanks for any suggestions,

    Mike

Philips DVP 5992 at Costco 40$, 1080p HDMI Upscaling. Works great, works even better with the modify firmware. These are also in Sears.

Thanks a bunch friend. I hadn't seen it that cheap but will check Costco.com. No Costco in this part of the country. I will check Sears as well but the only one around is TINY!

    Any other suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks again,
    Mike

Note that any DVD player that supports Xvid/Divx may not necessarily play everything in that format. Here's a sticky on encoding options that can be problems for playback on some DVD players.

For best results avoid those things unless you are absolutely sure they will work with your player.
