  1. I am trying to figure out what might be causing a couple of Glowing Horizontal Lines moving vertically up my VHS capture.

I have included an example. Both the raw HuffYuv Avi capture and a compressed mp4 file. Both show it pretty clearly.

It isn't something that will correct using tracking or TCB.

I cleaned the heads of my VCR using my Head Cleaning Tape, but may do a deeper cleaning opening it up, but was curious if anyone recognizes this issue.

Is this a recorded tape or pre-recorded, I've seen similar artifact on broadcast TV channels due to interference, Otherwise it could be noise in the mains, move the VCR to a different room and try again.

  3. It could be the tape. Try to play it with a different VCR. Is it the same?

They're probably already on tape. If a different VCR doesn't help (a JVC might help due to its image processing), noise reduction should eliminate or reduce them.

  5. Those look like interference bars to me.

Do they appear on the TV when you play the tape directly from the VCR, or only in the capture? Also, is it present throughout the whole tape or just in that section?

  6. Can you take a closeup photo of the reel ? Seems suspect

  7. This was a shrink wrapped professional tape.
Connecting directly from VHS player to Capture Device.
I just tried with another professional tape, and I see the same behavior.
It happens for the entire tape.

I am testing out a recently acquired JVC SR-V101US VCR, and trying to verify it.

Definitely looks like a VCR issue.

Any thoughts on what is needed to correct it?

If you mean software-wise, it depends on what your skill levels are, what you have available to you and how much money you want to spend on, for example, Noise Reduction software eg AVISynth, VDub, NeatVideo.

The capture is 29.97 but it has telecine interlacing (frame pattern PPPII), so it needs IVTC to get it back to 23.976. Then the noise (and artifact) needs to be dealt with.

What do you use/have in your software arsenal?

  9. Sorry, I meant in the hardware.
What in the VCR could cause this, and how would I fix the VCR.
Ie. Dirty Heads or something else.

  10. Notice that the even fields are much worse than the odd fields. The odd fields are mostly clean. No idea about the cause. Unfortunately when restoring the original progressive frames (by IVTC), all frames are getting affected.
Maybe recapping the VCR would help.
Is it still the same when you switch the TBC of your VCR off?

It looks like some sort of interference, perhaps interference created inside your VCR. Best check the tape on another known to be good VCR.

Yes it's wise to start with the cleanest, best signal from the VCR rather than degrade it then try and fix the degradation in post.

  12. Thanks.
    That looks to be it.
I pulled the vcr away from the rest of my electronic gear and it cleared up.
