I've ripped a 4K disk and have successfully shrunk it to HD (don't ask!), however it creates an MP4 file which doesn't have subtitles.

How do I encode the HD file as MKV with selectable subtitles?

  4. What's your 4k rip? Is it an ISO or a single mkv video?

I used MakeMKV and it found two things to rip so I have two MKV files.

  8. With clever Ffmpeg-GUI you can extract this subs and mux them with your mp4.

Thanks, just tried it - it identifies the subtitle files and I select one but then I get the error:

ATTENTION! this subtitle can't be converted

  10. Load your mkv with subs, click main, click multiplex.
Drag your mp4 into the grid.
On the left select video and audiostream from the mp4 and the subs from the mkv.
Set mkv as container and click multiplex.
    Done.

Thanks very much, that worked very well.

Out of interest, is there any way to store the subtitles file separately?

Load your mkv with subs, click main, click extract streams, select the subs on the left and click extract.
