    guys

i want to convert some VHS to DVD-R, but some of the sizes involved are ridiculous. I captured a 750+ Mg AVI, and after running it through TMPG it came out as 20 Mg!! i have a 60Gig WD Drive, and when i start capturing, it tells me i have about 60mins left, but i need more. How do i make the AVI smaller ?!?! my os is XP Pro on a NTFS drive

i am probably doing something really silly, or overlooking something

    thanx

oh ... and why does the sound go all quick and high-pitched when i convert it to Mpeg ?

Alas, that's just the way it in in Digital Video Land.
You could try using Huffy YUV encoding to capture (if that's possible on your setup) but that will only save you 50% of the captured filesize.
    Bottom line?
2 gig and 4 gig and, shoot, even 20 gig AVI capture file sizes are just part of life. This is why you just plain need a massive hard drive for video work.
    Rule of thumb:
DV AVI files use 5:1 compression. This works out to about 18 minutes every 4 gig of AVI capture. Put another way, that's 4.5 minutes per gig. Yeah, that's a whacking great lot of filespace. Welcome to the wonderful world of digital video. I don't know any way around it.
Wait till you capture a 2-hour TV movie...!

  3. you could also try pivideo mjpeg set to 19 as the capture codec. That will save some space and not sacrifice much in the way of quality.......with a VHS master you probably won't even notice the difference
entirely TOO much time on my hands
