  1. Usually i use VLC or POT player or mediaplayer classic to play Matroska H264 (from VHS PAL 625i50)
    but the visual "enlargement" from 720 to 768 ( square pixel to rectangular pixels ) is done with some sort of horizontal interpolation ( bilinear? )

    there is a more advanced player able to do this intorpolation (using extra filters or plugin ) using much modern algorythms ? ( something temporal ... or ... no idea what is the state of art )

    very thank you

    Not sure if you have the terminology correct here.

    720 * 576 from VHS means non-square pixels which then equates to 768 * 576 (a true 4:3) square pixels. And what is more there are some 16 pixels from the left and right which should be cropped away so that a true 704* 576 image becomes 768 * 576.

    VLC often displays 720 * 576 as 720 * 540 which is also 4:3. You need some reference content (real circle in the video) to ensure that what you see is true to the content

  3. If you need this level of control then perhaps ffplay will work for you?

  4. Try with MPC-HC.
    - Download and install MPC-HC.
    - Download and install madVR.
    - In MPC-HC menu: View->Options->Playback->VideoRenderer->select 'madVR'->button 'Settings'->Edit Settings->Scaling algorithms....

  5. And no scaler is going to magically make your VHS caps look like HD video.

    10 years ago i would agree with you but now - who knows what future brings? We can't be even sure if in the next few years human civilization will not be made suddenly obsolete... We are living in interesting times.

  7. The new NVIDIA RTX VSR technology may upscale lower resolution into perceived higher fidelity video/images if your Nvidia card is capable of doing this in modern times. I have confirmed that ffplay can do exact resolution output but it can seem odd looking based on aspect ratio that you may be used to viewing.

    well... the torchaddon for hybrid is doing this very nice but it's necessary a lot of time and a very very powerfull PC.. nothing that can be done on multiple VHSs just for fun.

    BTW...
    i'm thinking to stop setting 16:15 and hoping the TVs are able to show a 4:3 clip with a decent scaling algorythm ... and to resize on postproduction to 768x576 and leave SAR of 1:1 to be sure customers are able to see correctly (and on the best quality) the clips on laptop screen or modern TV...
