You arent doing anything wrong Playstation 2 are notorious for playing some and then not other DVD's.

Your problem is that it's a DVD-RW. I use the Pioneer DVR-104 as well. I have burned (using various software) DVD-RW's so perfect that old first-gen '96 DVD players have run them flawlessly.
PS2 still chokes on 'em. Not a damned RW I've tried has played in it.
PS2 has a problem with cheap DVD-R media sometimes too. However, it tends to play fine when I burn ordinary stuff onto Apple or Pioneer blanks, and generics from some places (esbuy.com) are perfectly functional. (shrug).... even with the DVD player driver update for PS2, still very buggy.
And to me the PS2's lack of VCD compatibility is completely unacceptable. I can play the things in a Dreamcast or a PS1, but not a PS2. Sounds like laziness and corner-cutting to me.
The up side is that the PS2 gives a great picture and sound for commercial DVDs...-MPB/AZ -
to play it safe with the PS2 use TDK media, it works really well in the ps2--
