  1. captured video in avi format was created in 2003 on a Win XP machine with XviD-01082002-1 and Brooktree Bt848 Capture Device

    "problem"
any "modern" video player ( win/linux ) will show the video with a "scrambled" image. (attached a sample)
    Image
[Attachment 72941 - Click to enlarge]

Each n seconds you see the reference image then it starts to "drip"/"flow"/"mix"...

To see it correctly I have only to have a "clean" Win XP and the XviD-01082002-1 installed.
In this configuration ( even on a VM ) the video is played as intended.
No need for BT drivers or any other player than the default win one.

Any attempt to install a VLC to see it ( even on the same machine where it works ) result in the video beeing "scrambled" even in the default win player.
Any conversion attempt resulted in the same mushy output.

I'll be grateful for any direction to go.

  2. Run a 32 bit version of VirtualDub2 on your 32 bit (VM) machine.

  3. Can you share a small file where this happens?
( I suspect that using ffmpeg with '-bug autodetect' or another value than 'autodetect' might help.
    see: https://www.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-all.html#toc-Codec-Options under 'bug'

  4. Unfortunately the behavior in the VirtualDub2 ( both the newest and the oldest ) is the same.
As long as I see it in the player "scrambled" I believe it is a no go to try to convert.

I can confirm it is OK on the VM win Clean XP and DviD xxx

  6. Sadly ffmpegs '-bug x' option doesn't help.
Problem is that Xvid version before v1 are probably not really MPEG-4 ASP compliant, and thus current decoders will not work.
I would try installing the Xvid Version inside the VM (might already be installed) then use VirtualDub 32bit (an old version) and see if that can open the file properly.
If that works one could additionally install Huffyuv convert the file to huffyuv and then copy that file to another system and convert it properly.
Problem is probably finding an Xvid installer for XviD-01082002-1.

  7. I have tried bug auto| trunc | ms and no solution.

I wander if I can find a win XP old school converter.
which is relying on system drivers/software

  8. If there the vfw codec can't be found, but the system can play back the file, installing Avisynth, using DirectShowSource and opening the file in VirtualDub should work.

  10. I verified this works in a 32 bit XP VM:

    1) Install your old xvid from post 9 in the XP VM.

    2) Open the video with VirtualDub2 but at the Open Video File dialog specify "Audio/video interleave (*.avi, *.divx)" in the Files of Type field. This forces it to use the old Xvid VFW codec you just installed (otherwise it may one of it's built in Xvid decoders).

    3) Select the compression codec and configure it -- don't use the old Xvid encoder! Finally Save Video. Here's the first 10 seconds of your video as a Lagarith AVI file.
