  1. Recently, I purchased a new LD player. It didn't come with an AV cable, so I went out and got a cheap store brand kind from my area. The picture quality looks good but I've been meaning to get a proper AV cable for it. One of the best brands I've heard about so far is Sony but I'm wondering if anyone here has had any experience with this such as certain brand models displaying less noise and such.

The best advice I've heard for this is when you own a $1000 machine, you shouldn't settle for a cheap $10 cable.

Also, if there are any threads that discuss this already please direct me to them.

  4. Spending more than about US$10 for a decent shielded 6 foot AV cable won't get you a better picture or sound. Maybe better build quality which can be important if you move things around a lot.

$10 is too expensive. $1.20 without shipping, which is why I prefer ordering several items at once. This one item with shipping is still only $4.

That's only for stereo audio. No video.

But yes, it's not really necessary to spend US$10. But in the ultra cheap range (under ~US$5) there will be more poor quality, unshielded cables. There's less junk around US$10.

I've heard Monster is better, but I'm not sure. I've also heard good things about Acoustic Research.

  9. I have a full box of those cables. Going to throw them out soon. You can also find them in thrift stores for a 25 cents.

Actually you do want someting better than dollar store cabloes but you don't need to go nuts ... past a certain point any difference noted is just confirmation bias.

You do want cables with proper braided shielding that actually covers the inner conductor(s). Cheapo cables like the ones picrured above just sorta wrap the shielding around. They don't reject noise properly. Decent RCA plugs like Neutrix are wortht eh extra too.

The good cables from Radio Shack are good enough for anybody really.
