  2. I Wouldn't recommand you a Sony even if they came over to pay me to tell you to buy it, they have lousy products, cost a fortune and give half the features others give for half the price.

not strictly true, they make very good dvd players. although i'll agree with you they suck for playing home made vcd-s, xvcd-s, s/xvcd-s(foreget it!) and i expect they'll suck with dvd-r as well.

  4. Hmmm... interesting, so, Price/Features, compare a Sony DVD Player to just about any other DVD Player, and Sony sucks! just like I said
And you just reinforced it by saying it doesn't play anything except DVD

Well guys I beg to differ, I have owned a sony DVD 535s model for 12-16 months now, admittidly spent a month making coasters when I first heard about vcd, but thanks to this site soughted that side of things out, BUT after tracking down the correct coloured cd-r(princo blue/silver) have not had a problem with making and viewing vcds, svcds, xsvcds (TMPGE) and mini DVD ( created through ULEADS DVD factory)
While yes they may be pricey, they like other products I own of sonys, stay the distance in the long term and I suffer few dramas with them.
In regards to macravision and regions, thats what tec screens are for, But only for the truly daring
Well, one persons view any way.
And remember Princo cd-r s and youl love your sony, I heard they have been closed down so I stocked uo for the next few years for all those movies to come.
    Keep up the good work
    Dave

  6. So Dave
Is that the only CDR you managed to play ? and you say they went bankrupt, what advice do you give the next Sony buyer ? I wish you luck ?
I own an old 5 years old Pioneer, so it's much older then yours, and I can play ANY media I want, blue/green/gold/silver/platinum, from any company, CDR or CDRW, makes no diffrence, and mine costed less then a 3rd of a Sony which can't play anything without giving you trouble

I beg to differ Sefy, my Sony DAV-S500 has played almost everything I've put into it. Every brand and every color. So far, the only things I've discovered it won't play are data & mp3 disc's.

Yeah, the list of features may be shorter, but the ones it does, it does properly. I use my sony dvd player for dvds, RGB into a 45" projection set, and i have a couple of hundred princo and vivastar cd-rs that work in it, for bog standard tv shows (just ordinary VCD) for anything requiring an eyepatch (oooo-arrr! shiver moi timbers!!) i use a bush dvd-1000, because it plays anything i throw at it, and is small enough and cheap enough to cart around if i want to. at the moment i'm busy converting it to 12V, so i can watch it on the bus to work (90 minutes a day, for 15 miles each way. dont you hate public transport?)
but i digress, the sony has a much better picture than my bush player, and much better sound as well. even the remote is nicer!
and after all, it -is- a dvd player.......

True Sef, I did find another brand pyrod, which my DVD excepts, so there are more out there, I also have heard that CD/rw have no problem playing, but as I only own a cd-r burner I have not been able to test this. But I wouldnt mind being able to put any cd-r into it and playing, but thats life and thats sony.
    Cheer all.
