Posted here since I can not see another appropiate place.

The topic header says it all. But I received a .jpg which fails to open on my Win7 system whereas other people can see it. No issues with other .jpgs

What gives and how to fix it ?

The are no properties, dimensions etc. Can not even upload it here as an attachment since I get an 'invalid file' error

For clarification, the image was downloaded by me via an email attachment >> I belong to a family history mailing list.

Now the message with the image intact can also be accessed via a web link and the same image can now be seen. So it does appear that there is an error with the attachment with all those who can see it actually viewing the online version.

I guess I should put this to bed unless there really is a 'fix'. But here is what the image should have looked like

"Fix" is to download it again as file was damaged in your downloading process.

Anyway, what can be recovered from your damaged file:

Fine. And attachment works using webmail.

But that is not my prefered method of reading mail. I still use progs such as Thunderbird and there is no way to download again.

Just strange that what works for one method does not work for another.

And it would help me (and others) if you were to clarify how you obtained an almost complete picture from a 'damaged' file

Then maybe there was some error in the mailing service.
Other possible culprits: Faulty RAM, HDD or some Thunderbird bug.

No idea what "methods" you meant here, you have two different files, one file from your Thunderbird is damaged when another on web is not damaged.

It's far for "complete", your image is 7 MP when this extracted thumbnail is just 160×120.
Use a hex editor, search for jpeg magic numbers, delete header of the main image [this would be first] so programs would try to read a thumbnail instead of a main image.

Even the thumbnail is damaged because damage starts somewhere at 7 Kb and most likely there is only garbage after that.
