I am trying to capture VCD compliant video. I am running the ATI MMC 7.1. I did download and install MMC 7.6, but Stinky's tools don't work for MMC 7.6 - it's a .rar file. But anyway, I did use Stinky's tools for MMC 7.1 to capture VCD video, but I keep losing 46%-50% of the frames. When I do the capturing, I shut down all other applications - including virus scan and applications that run in the background.
If I capture video in AVI format, it only allows 340x240, which is not VCD compliant, but does not lose any frames. Capturing in mpg is when I start to lose frames.
Is there a way to lower the loss of frames with Stinky's Tools, or better yet, is there a way to capture AVI's in 352x240 screen sizes?
BTW, I have tried to capture with Virtual Dub, and it says that it cannot find a capture device. I open the MMC first, close it, then open VD, like the guide said, but it does not work.

Run the SYSMON.EXE utility (it's in your /windows folder) and see what your CPU usage when you get these frame drops. I'll bet that K6-450 is pegged at 100%...
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
Huh??? Your confused about something.
There are two reg tools - one (basic) that works with all versions of MMC and one more advanced on that works with MMC 7.5/7.6 only
rar is an archive format like zip and you have to extract it before the program will work
you can capture higher than ???x240 with AVI's with MMC 7.6 -- you don't have to go through VirtualDub if your running 7.6 -- if your running 7.1 you have to install a WDM Wrapper before you can capture with VirtualDub
there are a lot of ways to lower your frame loss but I'm not sure if you are or aren't using MMC 7.6
if your like me (PIII 450mhz) your either going to have to use my hyper-SVCD 480x480 to capture or 352x240 -- anything more than that and your going to drop frames like crazyyour pal,

Thanks for the reply, Stinky. Here's the total problem:
I was running MMC 7.1, I seen that ATI had an upgrade, so I upgraded to MMC 7.6. After the update, I used your (Stinky's) regular tools, but everytime I started to capture, I would get an Illegal Error with ATIDVCR.DLL. So, thinking that it might be happening because I was using your (Stinky's) tools with MMC7.6, and they were designed for MMC7.1 (now I know that they work with all versions), I uninstalled MMC 7.6 and reinstalled MMC 7.1.
After reinstalling MMC 7.1, I tried to capture, and although I was no longer getting the Illegal Operation, I was getting a frame loss of 45%-50%. At this point, I posted the initial problem of this thread.
I have since went back and reinstalled MMC 7.6, along with the updated drivers and such. I also installed the advanced tool of your's (Stinky's) that works only MMC 7.5, 7.6. Now, I am back to the original problem. I cannot capture any video with the settings that are outlined in your (Stinky's) quide (the VCD 2.0 settings), because it gives me the Illegal Operation in ATIDVCR.DLL error - still. I am able to capture AVI, however, with no errors or frame loss, but only 320x240.
Has anyone ran into this problem, and do they have a possible solution? My shameless plug - XavierEnterprises.net -
Did you even run that SYSMON utility to see what your CPU utilization (%) was while you were having the frame drops? It is built into Windows, and using it won't break any bones or scratch your skin or anything like that.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
I actually went looking for the SYSMON program in my Windows folder, and could not find it. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place, or overlooked it. I'll do a Find Files or Folders to see if I can locate it.
My problem now is not the frame rate drop, but rather I cannot even capture with the VCD 2.0 setting because I get the Illegal Operation as soon as I start capturing.
If anyone knows, is there a way to capture AVI files in a 352x240 format with MMC 7.6? Has anyone else ran into the Illegal Operation (in ATIDVCR.DLL) that I am experiencing? Is there a fix for that Illegal Operation (yes I have tried uninstall/reinstall)? Yes, I know I am asking a lot of questions. My shameless plug - XavierEnterprises.net -
thats really seems like a question for ATI
my Registry Tool only changes the registry - not files
a problem in ATIDVCR.DLL is something you need to address with ATIyour pal,

Thank-you again, Stinky. I went to the ATI homepage and this is what I go for my Illegal Operation:
In many cases the problem may occur if the MPEG capture settings are too high for the system to cope with. Reducing the MPEG capture settings to "I FRAME only" or setting the capture FRAME SIZE to 320x240 may alleviate the problem.
Now, for the second question. Does anyone know how to capture AVI's at 352x240 format? My shameless plug - XavierEnterprises.net
