Anyone tried the new dvd+r/rw burner yet?

I would like to know if some people tried the new HP DVD200i or any other burner that burn dvd+r/rw..

I would like to know wich burner would be best for that..

Hi, Well for people that arent really familiar with the new dvd+r and dvd+rw here is a nice link so show you the difference between
dvd-r(w) and dvd+r(w). it is clear that the new dvd+r(w) format has more to offer than dvd-r(w). As for myself im gonna get a burner capable of doing those type of dvd and I suggest that anyone who wanna buy a new dvd burner to check this link and then make their choice

There is a DVD burner being advertised in my local retailer, the RICOH MPS120 DVD Recorder/Rewriter. Is this one compatible as DVD+RW?

Does anybody know about this DVD burner or any any other brand? Information will be appreciated.

I bought a HP DVD200i when it first arrived at the stores. So far, I haven't had any problems and have created several video dvd(s) and some file backups.

The only thing that I was not pleased about is that the software that comes with it sucks (which is no supprise). I bought Nero to replace the hp writing software. I bought DVD Complete to replace MyDvd. The reason was that, as someone had posted, MyDvd will convert the mpeg audio portion to something like PCM. And thereby it wouldn't burn a 3.8 gig movie (came out to like 4.9 gigs after the conversion).

As a side note, I would have bought the Philips +R version that uses seamless link, but it wasn't and still isn't out yet.

I wouldn't trust those comparisons too much over there at dvdplusrw.org. dvdplusrw offers some very shady consumer info and ALOT of +RW hot air -- I urge anyone looking at either a -R/W or +R/W drive to do some more independant research. Look at drive reviews here at vcdhelp and check out the following reviews/reports (also don't forget to Google and search thru older threads here as well ) --

I totally agree with Kusanagi. Look around a little before making your determination from one web site. The dvdplusrw.org site is put together by the makers of +RW technology.
It's like going to Microsoft's site and expecting a fair review of Linux.....

Despite the hype pro DVD+, I placed my order for a DVD- burner (DVR-104 for $339 + 10 DVD-RW discs for $24 ($2.4 per rewritable DVD disc not bad) @ hypermicro.com as my second DVD burner (first one is from Panasonic). DVD- works great today.
I like these + vs - clashes, makes no sense but fun

The real question is this, can I make a DVD video disc that will play in most DVD players, and probably future players?

The answer for either format, is yes.

Will the success of either format spell doom for all the time you've spent burning DVDs? No. If you have a disc that works in a DVD player today, burned with either drive type, it will continue to work in the future.

+R or -R is not a DVD specification. DVD is the specification. +R or -R are just methods to creating a disc that fools the player to think that it is reading a commercial disc.

The "debate" is over nothing.

If you're talking data only though, +R has an edge.

It was never my intention of saying -R was/is/whatever better than +R. I just wanted to point out some different perspectives and discussion on the whole matter, as you can't just visit one site (such as dvdplusrw.org - which practically brainwashes people full of +RW hype) and then declare you know exactly what you want to buy and declare which standard is the best.

IMHO, there is no best. Each format has both it's pluses and minuses (hehe - what a pun on words ) in seperate and specific situations.

Oh, if your doing data backups, I still have to say DVD-RAM is the better choice than +R...

Yeah I have a Hp 200i and if you've been reading the forum you've probably seen me blasting the drive because I couldn't get the dvd+rw's to work. But thanks to Kusanagi and others for giving me some valuable info, I went ahead and burned a dvd+r and it works absolutely flawlessly. The drive's performance is excellant. I never had a problem with that because it writes a 4.5 gig dvd in about 25-30 minutes and you can use a quick erase for dvd+rw's(which takes less than a minute in nero) and rewrite again. The only problems are that the software is kind of confusing and difficult to use, but the drive is fully compatible with nero 5.5.8.0 and nero is easy to use and very effective. The other problem is that I still can't get the dvd+rw to work in my dvd player but at least I know the dvd+r's work. So if you can deal with that then I recommend getting it because it is fast and really stable.

:o One more thing new buyers of DVD burners need to know:

As the newer Model DVD burners arrive sometime by the middle of May like Sony's +R/RW & the others, the older models that burn only in +RW will be reduced.

The problem exists that the reduced older models (+RW ones) of Sony, Ricoh, Philips & similar brands will NOT be able to burn using the lower priced DVD +R disc that are arriving also. The older models will only be able to burn using the more expensive +RW disc. And from all reports none of the manufactures are going to make their older models that burn in +RW compatible to burn the newer +R Disc & NO upgrade. They want you to purchase a new one.

Remember: You get what you pay for.
