I'm interested in doing direct stream copy of video (x264 and HEVC) with multiple audio streams, and Avidemux has always been a quick, easy tool for this purpose.

However, I'm concerned about Avidemux not interpreting the colorspace correctly. While the latest release uses DXVA2 as the video decoder, previous releases tended to turn the colorspace to RGB, loosing information.

Just how safe is using DXVA? Can it correct retain the original video colorspace?

Am I missing something? Why does Avidemux's colorspace interpretation matter if you're focused on doing Direct Stream Copy?

If it inverted the colors or showed the video as black & white, that's still just the program's own display. The compressed streams are going to be copied bit-for-bit, unmolested, either way.
My YouTube channel with little clips: vhs-decode, comparing TBC, etc.

It's that, from my experience with the older version of Avidemux, the change to RGB through the internal library darkened the dark tones of the video even in direct stream copy.

I was wondering if by using DVXA this issue could still happen?

If a stream "copy" works, there is no decoding or RGB conversion in the output video. You must have made a mistake in comparison if something was "darkened", perhaps a playback mistake such as choice of renderer; or it was not a stream copy

Hmm... 🤔 Ok, I'll run some more tests and I'll get back to you.

Yeah, sorry, folks, false alarm. It was indeed avidemux's preview that threw me off.

    Thanks anyway.
