  1. i am using the program handrake to compress my video files. assume that i add the file xyz.mp4 to the program

the video encoder that i am using is h.264 (x264). if i choose that video encoder then the output file is becoming Xyz.m4v. i am changing it to xyz.mp4 and then i am doing the compression. the encoded videos are working fine

i just want to confirm that i am allowed to put .mp4 instead of .m4v

  2. mp4 is more widely accepted as a playback format on very many devices so you are not wrong to choose mp4.

You can set Handbrake to default to mp4 if you look in the preferences menu.
Use the option to 'always use mp4'

    .m4v IS .mp4.

I think it was Apple who originated the idea of using .m4v, .m4a, etc. to further differentiate what's in an .mp4 stream. (.m4v = MP4 video, .m4a, an audio-only MP4 stream, and so forth (I know they have some other variations, such as for audiobooks, but I don't remember them off the top of my head.))

But, yeah, if you're working with a device or stand-alone player, you may need to rename the extension to .mp4 for the player to properly recognize it.

  4. M4V was already defined (an mpeg 4 elementary video stream) before Apple started using it for MP4 videos. They just changed the extension for MP4 when they added support for AC3 audio (15 years after all the other containers). Older Apple devices (without AC3 support) wouldn't try to play the files. That way they could tell all their users they needed a new hardware to play the new files.

Ah, okay. I just never saw it in 'widespread use' until after Apple made their changes.
