    This is probably pretty newby but I have a .avi and i want to convert it to .mpeg using the DivX 4 codec
    now ive had success turning it to a standard mpeg but i can't see an option/setting or something to use the DivX codec when encoding? anyone able to help?

    DivX is a codec used to encode compressed AVI files (or to de-compress the same), not to encode or decode MPEG files.
