  1. Hi,

    I have an AVerTV Stereo capture card which seems to work fairly well. I have the DivX codec, as well as raw codecs. What I'm running into is that I'd rather sacrifice hard drive space than quality (DivX makes things a little to blurry, even when pushed all the way to 6000Kb/s). However, I can't use too much HD as I don't have enough space for an hour at the uncompressed rates. What I'm hoping for is a codec that compresses a little, is FAST and high-quality.

    Desired specs:
    VirtualDub capture
    1 hour of video at 352x240, 44.1KHz Stereo, range: 15-30fps => 10GB
    eventually will need to be converted to MPEG1 for VCD

    Thanks!

  2. Have you tried Indeo 5 with a high quality setting?

  3. The fastest and best encoder for AVI is Mjpeg. It can be edited by frame, and the encoder is super-fast. Get a copy of the Morgan or Picvideo Mjpeg encoder.

  4. I did a little more experimenting with Huffyuv and it actually compresses around 2-3:1 which might be good enough. After I set my hard drive to DMA I was able to capture 704x240 with 0 dropped frames. I think I'll stick with that and clean off my hd some more.. the 352x240 just doesn't have enough resolution to survive the MPG1 compression.

    Thanks for the suggestions, though, I'll check those out.. maybe I can save some hd space
