Hello,
I bought this writer cause I would like to have the 2x speed for burning DVD's.
In every program I have it shows up as 1x Speed when I try to burn a DVD.
Any clue why I can't select 2x speed also?
Thanks for your help.

It has to do with the type of media you are using. If the drive detects that it may not be able to reliably record at the higher speed on a piece of media, it will default to 1X only. That being said, I have the DVR-104 and I've yet to have any of it record at anything other than 2X. I have used TDK, Verbatim, and the generics from cdrecordable.com. Haven't had a problem recording to any of it at 2X.

Hmm... Tried several brands, but also when there is nothing in the drive
only 1x shows up. -
Sorry, my english is poor, but i have a A04, and :
velc record:
disc veloc
acer 1x
pionner 2x
verbatin 2x
disc generic speed record is 1x

The disk tells the drive what it's maximum speed is. For instance, I bought some disks from YESBUY (supposed to be generic Princo's) that said MAX RATE = 10.8 Mbps, which is 1X. NERO (my burning software) reads this and sets the speed accordingly.
By the way, the YESBUY disks are CRAP... they won't even record a 1X, let alone at 2X. If the disks from CDRECORDABLE really DO burn at 2X, then this is the best price (on reliable media) that I have seen on the net. -

I'm also using the cd-recordables with a DVR-104, with the same result. Burns are 2X with no problems, playback was on a Panasonic RV-22 player. I have also have used the more expensive TDK and Pioneer disk with the same results. Would highly recommend the cd-recordable to anyone.
Software used for burns was the plug-in for MediaStudio 6.5 and Nero 5.5.8.0

I've only been able to burn at 1x using Nero 5.5.8.0. Even if there isn't a disc in the drive it only allows me to select 1x (2x isn't even an option.) -
