  1. Hello,
I bought this writer cause I would like to have the 2x speed for burning DVD's.
In every program I have it shows up as 1x Speed when I try to burn a DVD.
Any clue why I can't select 2x speed also?

    Thanks for your help.

  2. It has to do with the type of media you are using. If the drive detects that it may not be able to reliably record at the higher speed on a piece of media, it will default to 1X only. That being said, I have the DVR-104 and I've yet to have any of it record at anything other than 2X. I have used TDK, Verbatim, and the generics from cdrecordable.com. Haven't had a problem recording to any of it at 2X.

The disk tells the drive what it's maximum speed is. For instance, I bought some disks from YESBUY (supposed to be generic Princo's) that said MAX RATE = 10.8 Mbps, which is 1X. NERO (my burning software) reads this and sets the speed accordingly.

By the way, the YESBUY disks are CRAP... they won't even record a 1X, let alone at 2X. If the disks from CDRECORDABLE really DO burn at 2X, then this is the best price (on reliable media) that I have seen on the net.

I am in no way affiliated with them. That being said, I've found their generic media just perfect. I've recorded on 3 discs that were dual-sided and over 10 that were one-sided part of a 50 disc set. All of them are detected as 2X (and burn reliably at 2X) in both RecordNow Max 4.0 and Nero 5.5.8.0 with no problems. Some have said they don't get the same speed with these generics but they have A03/103 drives. My drive is a DVR-104 and I've had no problems at all with them burning at 2X. They play perfectly fine in my Sony NS-700P and Panasonic DVD-RV26 but not on my older Sony DVP-S7700.

  7. I'm also using the cd-recordables with a DVR-104, with the same result. Burns are 2X with no problems, playback was on a Panasonic RV-22 player. I have also have used the more expensive TDK and Pioneer disk with the same results. Would highly recommend the cd-recordable to anyone.
Software used for burns was the plug-in for MediaStudio 6.5 and Nero 5.5.8.0

I've only been able to burn at 1x using Nero 5.5.8.0. Even if there isn't a disc in the drive it only allows me to select 1x (2x isn't even an option.)

I can't get 2X to show up unless I put a Pioneer brand DVD-R in the drive first. What's weird is that the CD-R burn speed that is displayed in Nero depends on what kind of DVD-R media I put in the drive. When I go into the Pick CD Recorder option in Nero and look at the information for the Pioneer drive, it shows burn speeds for CD-R and DVD-R and the CD-R speed doubles if I have a Pioneer DVD-R disc in the drive. Not sure exactly why that is... [/url]
