  3. Is your VCD's poor quality compared to a commercial made VCD's, or is it poor compared to a DVD? This is a very important point.

    First, you need to know what the quality of a good VCD is, and then find out where the quality loss happens when making your VCD's. For the best VCD creation, use the standard rules:

    * Capture AVI at 352x480

    * Compress and resize to VCD using Tmpgenc

    * Burn to CD-R

    If you record from a DVD player, digital cable or satellite, or a S-VHS player, the quality should be quite good. Poor VHS tapes will not look good unless you use some major filtering to reduce the noise.

  4. Hey, this must be your first VCD, right ? With MPEG file created from Studio DV software. No wonder its quality sucks.
    Here is how I do it:
    1) capture the edited movie to an AVI file using Studio DV. I assumed you have a digital camcorder here based on your description
    2) encode that AVI file using TMPGEnc using its VCD template, result is an MPEG-1 file
    3) burn that MPEG-1 file as a VCD using Nero 5.x software
    The resulting quality will be much much better.

    In step 2, you can also encode to SVCD or XVCD for even better quality (superb I would say). The Terapin cannot simply match that quality due to its fixed encoding bit rate. The Terapin does not have DVD quality as the VCD-trading guy advertise. We understand he has a very good reason to (for VCD trading of course).
