Company called Freedompop has sim card for $45 to put into an unlocked phone. Service includes a year of service, unlimited minutes, texts and 1GB of data each month.
Sim card can be bought from Best Buy:
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/freedompop-12-month-prepaid-plan-lte-3-in-1-sim-card-kit/...?skuId=6187400
Freedompop makes money by charging for extras. The above service does not include basic voicemail. If you want that, then that is about another $25/year. (Paid to Freedompop, not Best Buy.) Also, if you get the voicemail, it is required to have your bank card on file with Freedompop. Then they can automatically charge you for certain things (like data use overage).

Some banks let you generate a passthrough temp number with limits and expirations that you set yourself. Under the true limit/length, of course. So you can create a number that's valid for 2 months, with a $20 limit. I never give a company free reign to change whatever they want.
