  1. I have a cheap LG android phone and I wonder if it possible to directly transfer mp3 files from the phone to a small mp3 player via USB cable. Obviously I would need a micro to mini USB cable. Presently I would transfer the files first from the android phone to a pc, and then from the pc to the mp3 player, but I wonder if I can just transfer the files directly from the phone to the mp3 player.

I don't think so, most do not have file support access for the USB port
You are doing it the only way possible, unless both the mp3 player and the phone are Wi-Fi cable, or Near object capable, using Bluetooth
You could try connecting both to the pc at the same time
Then drag and drop the files from the phone to the mp3 player
A one time operation the music would NOT be copied to the pc
Just copying files from one external device to another external device

You would need to use the PC. The devices aren't designed to interact with other hardware and only show up as "storage devices" to a computer.

Try connecting the mp3 player and see if the smartphone sees it as a storage device itself.

  5. I can connect the LG phone to my computer and I can see/transfer files no problem. But I want to see/transfer files from a USB memory stick (or mp3 player) to the LG phone. I bought this OTG cable for $2.50
    See here:
    http://www.microcenter.com/product/423457/Micro_USB_to_USB_OTG_Cable
I can use this cable to see/transfer files from USB memory stick/mp3 player to these 2 devices (Samsung Galaxy S3 Android version 4.4.2 and Galaxy S6) but when connected to my LG phone, nothing happens. No response whatsoever from the phone.

some android devices had to be rooted and special otg software installed before they could be made to transfer files over usb.

  9. There are some websites like:
    http://www.kingoapp.com/
that offer a 1 click solution to root the smartphone. However, I don't think it is worth the risk of rooting that is explained on the above website.
As a last ditch effort to get my smartphone to recognize a USB memory stick/mp3 player, I've decided to buy this modified USB cable for a dollar. See here:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/131256338070?ul_noapp=true&chn=ps&lpid=82
There was some info on the web that seemed to imply that some smartphones don't supply the 5 volts to an attached USB memory stick. The above modified USB cable will solve that problem, if indeed that is the reason my phone won't recognize the USB memory stick. Here is a picture of the modified cable. The cable connects the smartphone to the USB memory stick/mp3 player, and also connects to a 5 volt source.

You started out saying small mp3 player, that device should have it's own battery to go with the player software
Now you are saying USB memory stick
    So which is it
A memory stick, or an mp3 player ?

  11. Although there is a battery inside the mp3 player, I still think the mp3 player requires an external 5 volt source (usually provided by computer) when connected to a computer to be able to transfer files. When I connect my mp3 player to a PC and transfer files, the transfer will be successful even if the battery is removed from the mp3 player. This proves that the computer must provide the 5 volts.
Most USB memory sticks will light up when connected to a PC and actively transferring files. The power for this light must come from the computer.
