Hi - frustrated newbie here.
Downloaded Open Shot Video Editor last summer and was able to produce a You Tube video in short order with no problem. Fast forward to a couple days ago when I tried to use it again with some new clips that we shot and when trying to play the clips in the preview screen, they 'stutter' - audio and video both. Clips will play fine in Media Player but stutter in editing program. Downloaded several other freebie programs with the same results. Can't figure out the problem - I'm sure there's nothing wrong with my clips because it's doing it with the same clips that worked fine last summer as well as the new ones we just shot. It acts like it's maybe a buffering problem? I did have a problem recently with my Band In A Box program not loading after a Windows 10 update and they had me remove a couple small files from the program and everything was back to normal - could this be a similar problem. I really like the way Open Shot works and would like to keep it but.........
Any suggestions?
Thanks!!!

A new version of Open Shot was released in November. Have you updated to the new version? (Based on your post, it isn't clear to me that you have.) The release notes said some of the changes were "Improved Playback Smoothness" and Improved Stability (especially for Windows)".

I tried both Kdenlive and Openshot last month.
Openshot is malware as far as I'm concerned. The little SOB tried to slither its way into requiring net access to function (WTF? why?), and then barfed stuff all over the system even after uninstalling. Avoid that POS.
Kdenlive just didn't work stably.
There are no freeware NLEs.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I have not problem with stability of Kdenlive. Bit problem to install it properly but then it works o.k. I have to point MLT files and download Zeranoe ffmpeg build and everything after restart work as it should. Of course it is 64bit windows only. Primary make for linux, so Windows version is bit behind, but as I said works great for me.

Oh, but there are. I currently use Davinci Resolve that comes in 2 versions. Studio at $299 and the free version. I suggest you look at the Blackmagic website.
Canon C100 mk2 - Dell XPS8700 i7 - Win 10 - 24gb RAM - GTX 1060/6GB - DaVinci Resolve Studio 18.6.3 - Blackmagic Speed Editor - Presonus Faderport 1 - 3 calibrated screens -
Agreed. And DR14 has come a long way supporting h.264 decoding. In fact, there are plenty of freeware/non-commercial NLEs, compositing, vfx, 3D sw. (btw I am not talking abt Avisynth/vdub/ffmpeg/handbrake or most of the other freeware that gets touted on this forum)
