Google comes up with several sites; I'm concerned that if I pick one at random, I may be bombarded with ads, or, worse, get stuck with a virus. I'd like a suggestion for a true and tried website.

    Thank you.

What video format do you plan to cut? A bit of information about your project may bring some recommendations.
One editor won't normally do them all.

Explanation: Those videos were taken with a smart phone by my children; some of them are several minutes long, and I want to either just cut them or extricate sections. These shortened videos are eventually going to be put on a DVD.

    Hi,
you can do it Non linear editing program NLE for short. For example my favorite Kdenlive or VSDC free version, but it is not as powerful as full version or I believe mentioned earlier Kdenlive.
Its installation is bit tricky (you should copy parts of ffmpeg (so it can handle almost all format) as is described on their homepage), but it is easy to manage cut reencode apply filters transitions and so on. Check tutorials on youtube if you needed.
Or you can do it in program like Virtualdub, Virtualdub filter mod, or Avidemux. This isnt best way, but it is possible also. No transition etc. Just cut, paste and reencode.
If you want to cut loslless without any quality change, so you have to learn about keyframes. You can start cutting only at this frames.

Just want to mention: DVDStyler has a visual trimmer (ie you get frame accuracy with only one re-encode and no need for separate cutterprogram)

  9. Most Video converter and editor software can do this job, much better than online tool.
