  1. I am new to this DVD ripping thing but i follwed the newbie guide and ripped "Kiss of the Dragon" with Smartripper, cut it down with IFOedit9, used DVD2avi,Tmpgnc, and burned on a Maxwell DVDr using Ulead Movie Factory. The end result plays fine on my computer but when I try it in my PS2 it just says Disc read error. What did I do wrong?

  2. try a different brand of discs.

I spent a fortune on discs thinking 'If I spend another £1 per disc, they should be ok', but what I should have done, is go straight to the verbatim.

Verbatim have got o be the best for the money, and work on my ps2, no other disc will.

  3. ps2? ....pretty expensive DVD player if you ask me....also heard that the XBox outperforms PS2 in terms of games (PS2 has a HORRIBLE video card design)

if you checked the DVD compatibility section on vcdhelp.com, you'll see that the PS2 has NO support for VCD, SVCD, or XVCD....it only supports DVD-R and no DVD-RW

  5. Ok, heres the real deal...I have had several models of PS2 and I have an XBOX and I have been burning my own DVD-Rs for awhile...

the PS2 is VERY PICKY when it comes to playing DVD-Rs...also, the specific model of PS2 that you have makes a big differnce in terms of how well it will read DVD-Rs...

I had a v1 PS2 (the very first model) and it would ONLY read APPLE brand DVD-R movies...APPLE brand DVD-Rs are widely considered one of the best out there but they cost $5 per disc...I never tried VERBATIMS but they are supposed to work as well as APPLE...however, this PS2 would NEVER read movies on any other DVD-R media...it would just give a "disc error" message or a black screen...

I eventually got a v4 PS2...this one would read my APPLE discs and it would ALSO read GENERIC discs...it worked well for awhile and then one day after repeatdly trying to get it to boot up a generic DVD-R that it was having problems with, the laser suddenly stoped working...now it won't read ORIGINAL DVD's or DVD-Rs...it will, however still read CDs...now I'm not saying this will happen to every v4 PS2, but the v4 PS2s are notorious for having DVD lasers that die easily...

Now I am in no way bashing the PS2...my PS2 is modifed with a NEO 4 chip so it will play backup discs...I am a big PS2 fan and even though my PS2 won't read DVDs anymore, I still use it to play my hundreds of backups which are on CD...Also, when I get around to it, I can pay $85 and get the laser repalced and have it running just like new...If you think I am making up the PS2 laser issue, check out the PS2 forum at www.cdrom-guide.com and do some searches...You will find many others with DVD-R problems and with laser problems especially on the v4...

Interestingly enough, my XBOX plays every single one of my DVD-Rs that my PS2 has had problems with...it even plays Generic DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs flawlessly....

If there is a moral to this story, I recommend that if you have a v1-v4 PS2 that you don't use it to play movies on DVD-R unless you use APPLE or VERBATIM media...v5 and the most recent v6 PS2's are supposed to have more powerful lasers...Also, no matter where you are located, you can buy the better media online, so thats no excuse...however, in the long run, the 3 dollars extra that you spend per disc to get the better media, could be used to buy a Cheap DVD player that has no problem playing generic DVD-Rs...

...sorry for the long post, but I've been through it and I thought I might spare you some frustration....enjoy
