  1. Hi. I知 a novice at video editing but decent with computers. My son (6) wants to record playing Mario games on his Switch and put himself playing it in a video in the corner (like he sees on YouTube). Using Windows laptop(s), can someone highlight hardware and software I could use, or point me to some online tutorials? Thanks!

Easiest way is to use your sons video as an overlay. Both ffmpeg and avisynth uave overlay filters.
As a personal preference i prefer avisynth since it seems to be easier to set duration, start frame, size ,transparency and position if that is needed.

I would say you want to use OBS and set up different video sources for your game and then your son. You can size each window and overlay one on the other within the program. It's what YouTubers use to create those videos.

You need a video input capture device for the game video and then a camera for your son.

Appreciate the info, laptop has a webcam so I need to split off the video game video. I知 assuming HDMI splitter and HDMI to USB adapter should give me the feed for the video game to the laptop. I値l look into it. Thanks!

IMHO better to capture video from game itself without re-capturing HDMI - NVidia offer such low CPU overhead HW/SW capture and compression named 'ShadowPlay' .
