Yes I do. I have a hp dvd writer on my computer and a jvc dvd player on my tv. It acts like it skips and pops in the writer. But plays well in the jvc combo. Can i hook something to the combo and play it my computer? John

Is this a drag and drop type "data" disc with video file(s) on it?.....or is it an actual DVD Video disc complete with VIDEO_TS folder?

  6. In addition to what hech54 asked, is this a burned disc (i.e., created on a DVD burner) or a commercially pressed disc (i.e., something you bought)? If it is a burned disc, it may be done on lousy media. Different players handle bad discs differently.

The way to tell if it is bad is to test it with DVD Speed or similar software. You have to have a Lite-On or similar DVD burner for this software to work.

  7. Before anything else, try playing the problem dvd in another computer. If it plays OK, you've narrowed the issue down to the dvd drive in your HP laptop., which makes things easier: get the drive replaced or buy a cheap portable USB drive like an LG. But you want to rule out hardware first: if it isn't the drive in your laptop, you could be in for a wild goose chase trying to figure out why the disc is bad.

theewizard suggested you try to make a duplicate disc: it would be a good idea to do that while testing playback in another computer. Sometimes a dupe will play better than an original.

The other questions people have asked you are important as well: what kind of dvd is this? Commercial Hollywood disc or something you burned? What device did you burn it in: your HP laptop or the JVC combo deck? If its a commercial disc, its likely just a bad pressing with defects: these will play well in some devices but not others. Making a copy disc on a PC that can read it will often help. If you burned it in the JVC, it might need to be finalized, or perhaps the JVC made a weird burn that only it can read (happens with recorders occasionally). If you burned it with the HP laptop, the HP drive might have made a crummy burn that it can't read but your JVC can. What burning software do you use in the HP? If its anything but ImgBurn, you're liable to have problems now and then.

If burned, what brand and type of disc is it? DVD-R? DVD+R? DVD-RW? DVD+RW? Dual Layer? Some brands and types work better than others in some drives after the drives start aging.

(There is no simple way to hook your JVC combo deck to play into your laptop. You would need a USB video capture device like EZcap or Hauppauge USB Live.)
