  2. If you "capture" via firewire you will get an exact copy of the DV compressed video and uncompressed audio data that's on the DV tape -- about 25 Mb/s for the video. That is the preferred method. You can use DVIO or WinDV to wrap that data in an AVI container. If you will be using your DV camcorder in passthorugh mode to capture your VHS you will get the same thing. Decompressing the DV video and recompressing it with a lossy codec to get smaller files will get you worse quality.

    Virtualdub is probably the best for capturing analog losslessly, assuming your capture card can output a raw untouched capture (usually in YUY2). If you have a lot of DV tapes to capture, I would invest in a PC firewire card to losslessly transfer the DV video data.
