I have a video with a resolution of 1920 x 802 (most blu-rays are in this wide screen format).
I've create a .sup file (from an srt) in Subtitle Edit, and have positioned it at 5 pixels from the bottom in 1920 x 1080 format.

I've then created an mkv file in mkvmerge.

When I play the file in Media Player Classicm the subtitles are positioned where I thought they would me (see image).

However, when I play the file in VLC, the subtitles are positioned, it seems, 5 pixels from the bottom of the video - and compressed (the second image).

You may say, just don't play the video in the VLC. I use Plex app on roku to view my library on tv, and on Plex shows the subtitles as the VLC does.

Is there anything that can be done?

Seems that VLC ignores the borders you have created and attempts to play back the video in the AR it finds.

Have to tried to over-ride the AR setting in VLC playback to 16:9 ?

But if those borders are fixed then VLC should play it correctly. So something is wrong with the created video since you, normally, can not place subs below the video. To do it that blended video would have to be 16:9.

What does MediaInfo say about your MKV file?

I'm not sure what information you'd like to see from MediaInfo.
I attached the exported text file

I am curious why the subtitles show below the video line with Median Player Classic

Although I haven't done it - you could try MKVMergeGUI and play around with the aspect ratio and/or 'Display width/height found on the 2nd tab 'Format Specific Options.

The other thing is that the AR of the 2nd video (the live part) does not look right. It is a little squashed in comparison to the top sample. So it seems that most players do not like these forced borders.

Like I said, unless my friend's suggestion above works, is to create hard borders of 139 pixels top and 139 pixels bottom and encode your video as 1920 *1080. It will still look the same as in MPC but also the same in the other players.
