Pioneer DV-636 - not playing VCD's properly.

My pioneer dv-636 refuses to play VCD's properly. What happens is that it plays for a few seconds then freezes, then plays for a more seconds, then freezes again, etc, etc.

Any idea how I can overcome this or upgrade my firmware so that it plays VCD's.
