  1. Happy NY guys. Sometimes when I record using my phone and when I transfer the video to my computer, the video is either 90 degrees off or upside down. Is there a free, easy to use, program that can transpose or flip the video 90 or 180 degrees?

You can rotate/flip mov files with Quicktime pro without reconverting.

For any other format use for example Xmedia Recode, Open File, choose Format: Custom, Format: MP4 (for example), under Filters/Preview add the Flip Image filter, click on it, Vertically Flip, Add to Queue and last hit Encode. If you want to rotate 90 degrees add the Rotate filter.

  3. Thanks Baldrick. Is there anyway to keep the same quality? XMedia Recode flip the mov file vertically, but downsized the original movie from 100 mb to 7 mb. I changed the format from "3GPP" to "MOV" (thinking that was the issue) but the finished file has flashes of green on the bottom half of the video. Not sure why it does that. Codec = MPEG-4

I changed the framerate from 15 to "keep original" and thought maybe that would keep the original quality and size but it didn't. Still only 7mb from 100 mb.

What is the difference in bitrate? It is currently set at "average bitrate" but you can change it to "2 pass average bitrate" and "constant quantizer" When you change it to the last one, it changes the value from 2000 bitrate to 65567 quantity.

Constant or Average Bitrate = 2000 (should I change it? I have no idea what is optimal)
Constant quantizer = 5 (should I change it? I have no idea what is optimal)

GOP length = 25 (should I change it? I have no idea what this is)

this won't fix your current problem
BUT learn to hold your phone horizontal, like a normal camera
and usually with the, bottom of the phone on the right

learn to hold it the correct way all the time and you won't have to worry about it

  5. Quicktime pro isn't free. I was wondering if there is a free tool. When I use the free Quicktime version, it will automatically play the mov file and vertically flip it. But the original file on the computer is still upside down. I use WMP and VLC most of the time so want to 1) keep the same quality of the original 100mb mov size 2) flip it rightside up 3) save it on the computer

Using Xmedia Recode, I can't seem to figure out why it shrinks it from the original size to 7mb. Even tweaking the file formats and birates and framrates, I can't figure it out. Thanks in advance.

I always hold it horizontally, but when you press the button to have front-facing camera, the red button needs to be on the LEFT. I had it on the RIGHT the entire time. Apple doesn't catch that when you flip the camera. It makes the movie file upside down when you transfer it to your computer.

Doesn't it get bigger if you increase the bitrate? And usually better quality.

And use h264/avc video if you are going to reconvert. Not any old crappy mpeg4 format.

you didn't say iphone in the first post
and why does the button have to be on the left
hold the phone with the left hand so you can push the button with the right
and if the #$%^& iphone won't work that way... start cussing apple or maybe DL a different camera app from the istore ? is that possible ?

As a longtime iPhone user if you take a picture with the phone vertical say for a portrait still, the home button should be at the bottom. If you are shooting video then with the phone correctly in the horizontal position ie 16:9 aspect ratio then the home button should be on the right. I'm totally ambidextrous so I don't have any holding problem with whichever paw! But practice makes perfect plus remembering a few rules

It does, but the encoded file is still nowhere as large as the original file.
Is there anyway to make the encoded files' quality same as original quality? Like an option I am suppose to click on?

    No such option.

But I usually use constant quantizer with a value of 15-20(for h264 video).

Do you get much worse quality?

  12. Does anyone know the difference in these four rate control modes and what is optimal?

(original file size is 100 mb)

Under the "Video" tab and "rate control mode"
    - average bitrate - I put 5000 (output is 61 mb)
    - 2-Pass average bitrate - I put 5000 (output is 61 mb)
    - constant quality - its currently set at 24 (output is 48 mb)
    - constant quantizer - its currently set at 20 (output is 150 mb)

I'm going through each one to see if they make a difference in output. The last two take twice as long as the 2-pass. The average bitrate is the fastest time.

Baldrick - what is the difference between constant quality and constant quantitizer?
