tmpeg problem

when encodeing a avi file to mpeg al the file paths are ok but at 41% i get an eror sayin invalid floating decimel point and it stops any ideas
could it be a corrupt avi file ( it was downloaded)

also which is the best codec to install i got angelpotion but have read a few bad things about it
