Hello All and thanks in advanced for any advice given

    Problem:
I have an .avi file that I want to encode to mpg2 using Tmpeg. When I try to open the file it says it is invalid or unsuported.

The file plays fine in BS player and VLC player. I have Direct Show as a 2 pritority and at the top of the list in the enviromental settings in Tmpeg

Here is a Gspot screen shot of the file:

It's got VBR audio that TMPGEnc chokes on. You can save out the audio as a WAV in VirtualDub Mod with full processing and either add it back in or encode it to AC3 with a program like ffmpeggui. Then add that back with the encoded video when you author it. Directions here for VDM: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic280779.html

WuTangDvD, please don't double post. If you wish a topic moved, contact a Mod. I've deleted the other post and I will move this one to Newbie/General.

Thank you for the advice and i was able to rip the audio out in WAV format then converted it to MP2

But how do I now encode the video? Tmpg still will not open it. Its like i have to add the new WAV or MP2 audio to the orginal avi and get rid of the old audio track. how do I do that

I usually convert the WAV to AC3 and use that in the authoring program for my audio source. But you can put the AVI into VirtualDub Mod and add the WAV audio in. Move the WAV audio to the top of the 'Streams' list and delete the VBR audio. This will not damage the original file. Save out both the audio and video in 'Direct stream mode' with a new name and use that for TMPGEnc. This is assuming there are no problems with the video itself.

I'm assuming you are aware that is a PAL video and you will have to do a framerate conversion if you want it in NTSC format? You can end up with sync problems if not done properly. If you do this often you might want to try ConvertXToDVD as it can handle most VBR audio and it does well at framerate conversions. You will run into VBR audio fairly often with net videos. (Also PAL video.)

If you're not looking to un-VBR the original AVI, only encode to MPG-2, you can just use the extracted WAV as the audio source in TMPGEnc (using the original AVI as the video source, of course ).

I run into VBR with the InDigital and Systm vidcasts particularly, and doing the above works just fine.

    Just another option...

    Thanks fellas.

I tried what you said Jim, but it will not except the avi as a video source. I will try convertxtodvd

ConvertX works but the encode does not look as good as Tmpeg. It will do I guess.

Is there a how to guide for doing this:
