I would like to record a documentary video program from CNNgo.com and store it on a DVD or flash memory for my granddaughter because she does have CNN in their basic cable subscription . Please recommend a simple freeware program . I dont need any fancy capability except perhaps a selection tool so only the video portion is captured. Thanks

You could try CamStudio. But with most any screen capture program you will end up with huge filesizes, so you do need a fair amount of hard drive space.
You can usually re-encode the files to a more compact format with some loss of video quality.
I prefer fraps, but it isn't free.
