DVD to mpg or mp4

I am using videostudio 11 plus and it first converts the DVD to a small vsp file. This file can then be placed in a edit system
OK how do I now convert/save to MPG or MP4

Apparently VideoStudio didn't help you learn much about video. DVD is already MPG. DVD isn't anything else. MPG is a lossy codec not designed foe editing. MP4 is a container, not a format, not a codec. but it can contain MPG encoded video if you insist. Otherwise, you have to re-encode MPG to another codec and take the quality loss.

Your VideoStudio must be pretty primitive software if it can't "edit" an MPG. Practically any lossy codec "editor" can work with MPG. Many of them make a mess of it, but that's you're concern not ours.

What is a VSP file?

Files with the .vsp file extension are most commonly associated with the Corel VideoStudio slide show creation software. The VSP files are project files that have been created with the VideoStudio program. These files contain the slide show project data such as the video, audio and image references, movie timeline settings and slide show effects.

The .vsp file extension is also used for ClosetMaid Visual Storage Planner Design files, SPX sprite files and Virtusales ASP compiler project files.

So in your case it is a EDL or Edit Decision List that lists your edits and where your video and sound clips are stored. When you are finished you can use the VSP file to EXPORT your or maybe RENDER your handy work into a format that it supports. I would suggest you read the HELP file associated with the program.

Just a reminder a VSP file is NOT A VIDEOFILE it is simply a project file. So you don't convert it to video but rather use it to instruct your VideoStudio program to complete it's task.. When you save the small VSP file it means at anytime in the future opening this file will open up VideoStudio to where you left off edit waiting for you to make any changes or additions if required.

Or just use vob2mpg or vidcoder if you want a mp4(h264 video and aac audio)...

I will try that mp4 converter. In used handbrake and ended up with an mp4 about half the size of the original. Lost a bit of resolution as well.

For most editing I use final cut pro but this was for a dvd to video. I knew it was going to be low res but not this bad. The mp4 converter may be better.

You can adjust the video resolution/frame size under the picture tab in handbrake and vidcoder. Like use the original resolution with correct aspect ratio.
